Inside Rory and Lorelai's Home in the Gilmore Girls - living room decor

Though we briefly touched upon Lorelai's house in the Gilmore Girls in the previous post about the Year in the Life Netflix mini-series, this post looks at the house during the course of the entire programme lifespan. Starting from season 1, this post explores Lorelai and daughter Rory's little abode, and how it changed over the series.

In the very first episode of the series, Lorelai's house has some little quirks that disappear in the second and subsequent episodes. These quirks include a step from the kitchen down to the living room, a large Victorian window in the kitchen, a reconfigured entrance hall, a side door in the sitting room that opens in the opposite direction throughout the rest of the series and various decorative features such as a fully-wallpapered kitchen. All of these features vanish in proceeding episodes.

Lorelai and Rory's first home together was an outbuilding at the Independence Inn, where Lorelai worked before saving up to buy their house in 1995. The two-level house is fronted with a porch and a pale blue clapboard facade. Inside is an eclectic mix of antiques and secondhand furniture collected over the years. The house has a bedroom and bathroom upstairs, and a living room, vestibule, kitchen and what was probably intended as a dining room but functions as Rory's bedroom, downstairs.

In season five and six the house goes through a large renovation particularly upstairs, with Lorelai's quaint cottage bedroom, with its delicate floral print wallpaper and patchwork quilts, transformed into a stylish suite with adjacent Jack and Jill bathroom. The interiors throughout the house change around this time, with a new lick of paint and new decorations in the sitting room and kitchen, though Rory's room seems to remain largely unchanged.

The house used as Lorelai and Rory's home is a structure built on a Warner Brothers backlot in Hollywood, along with the rest of the Stars Hollow set. Their home shares a structure with Sookie's home, accessed from within by a hidden door in the Gilmores' living room. The set is occasionally open to the public who can tour Stars Hollow including Lorelai's House.

You can currently stream the whole Gilmore Girls series on Netflix. See how the house looked in the follow-up mini series, A Year in The Life, in this previous post where you will notice the house has undergone another decorative revamp since the end of the series.
