Arielle grew up in South Florida prior to moving to Philadelphia for undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania. She then worked in clinical research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston before attending medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. During medical school, she spent a year at Harvard earning her MPH in Health Management to learn more about the intersection of healthcare systems and public health. Her hobbies include swimming, cooking, and spin classes. She has been enjoying her time in Baltimore and has felt especially supported and welcomed by the Osler Medical Residency program administration and residents during the transition to residency in a new city. Arielle is excited to explore the Baltimore food scene and to get to know more of the amazing residents in the program.
Daniel Ardeljan, MD, PhD

Dr. Ardeljan is originally from NYC. He went to Duke for undergrad and spent a year as an IRTA fellow at the NIH prior to joining the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for his MD and PhD studies. He is a Johns Hopkins Young Investigator's Day Awardee in 2020 for his graduate work examining expression of LINE-1 retrotransposons in cancers and determining their impact on replication stress in proliferating cells. He chose the Osler Medical Residency because it was evident that while the physicians graduating from the program are among the best-trained in the world, the culture of this program engenders a true sense of camaraderie, partnership, and mentorship among residents and faculty alike. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking for and playing with his wife and son, and running along the Waterfront Promenade or playing intramural soccer in the social sports leagues around the city. Baltimore is a great city for young medical professionals: affordable, nice housing in trendy neighborhoods with a great food scene; short commute times; and unparalleled medical training.
Wardah Athar, MD

Wardah was born in Pakistan but spent most of her childhood living between Texas and Saudi Arabia. She attended Georgetown University, where she majored in Neurobiology and minored in Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations, after which she was awarded a Mitchell Scholarship for graduate work in Ireland, where she studied Bioengineering with a focus on stem cell therapeutics at Trinity College Dublin. She went to Yale for medical school, where she developed an interest in refugee health and primary care. Outside of the hospital, she loves to spend time gardening with her two-year-old daughter and hiking with her husband. Within the first few weeks of residency it became clear to Wardah that the absolute best thing about the Osler program is the people- her co-interns are incredible to work with, the JARs and SARs are always available and genuinely committed to teaching, and the ACS system is uniquely designed to enhance each intern's individual growth and development with constant feedback and support. Wardah also loves the numerous parks and trails around Baltimore and is looking forward to spending more time exploring the food scene as the year goes on!

Todd was born in New York, NY and grew up in Chappaqua, NY. He attended Williams College, graduating with a B.A. in chemistry. After college, Todd worked at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases where he developed an interest in translational immunology research. He then attended the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology before couples matching to Johns Hopkins with his partner (psychiatry). Outside of the hospital, Todd enjoys woodworking, cooking, and exploring the Baltimore food scene. With respect to the Osler residency, he really appreciates the supportive environment and graduated independence afforded residents, as well as the longitudinal relationship with his ACS.
Justin Brilliant, MD

Justin was born in the suburbs of Baltimore and grew up in western Maryland. He attended Johns Hopkins University where he earned a BS in Neuroscience and a minor in music, while performing research in breast and colorectal cancer. He attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine and continued his hobbies of piano playing and singing at coffee-house events and local bars. Justin is a Baltimore sports aficionado and has season tickets for the star-studded, electrifying Baltimore Ravens. As an intern in the Osler Medical Residency, Justin has been blown away by the knowledge base, clinical acumen, and incisive lectures of his senior residents and faculty. The level of autonomy and support structure in place as an intern has allowed Justin to grow exponentially as a clinician. While in Baltimore, he has enjoyed running along the waterfront from Fell's Point to the Inner Harbor, eating ice cream in Patterson Park, and attending art festivals and concerts in Mount Vernon.
Carly Cantilena, MD

Carly was born and raised in the Maryland suburbs of DC, and is very excited to be back in her home state for residency training. She spent 14 years at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart for elementary through high school. She then attended Case Western Reserve University where she majored in biochemistry. Thereafter, she spent two years at the National Institutes of Health in their post-baccalaureate research training program, where Carly developed an interest in clinical research. During that time, she was also a member of The Washington Chorus in Washington, DC. Carly then traveled west to her parents' alma mater, The University of Kansas, for medical school. So far at Hopkins, she has enjoyed the unique comradery of her intern class. She is delighted to be surrounded by such accomplished peers, residents, and mentors. Outside of medicine, Carly likes to cook overly-complex recipes, bake alongside The Great British Bake Off, sing showtunes loudly in the car, walk her two energetic dogs, and relax with her nearby family.
Stephan Castellanos, MD, MBA

Stephan grew up as the oldest of five siblings in Birmingham, Alabama. Not wanting to stray too far away from SEC football, he attended the University of Mississippi and majored in Economics with an emphasis in game theory. He then went on to pursue a dual degree MD/MBA at Baylor College of Medicine in connection with Rice University-- while there he also completed an internship with the consulting firm McKinsey & Company working in the healthcare sector. Stephan enjoys visiting vineyards and watching reality TV-- mostly reliving the time he won a bike on Slime Time Live in fourth grade. He has really enjoyed the supportive group of residents who welcomed him into the Osler program, and he is very grateful for both their teaching and patience. He lives in the Fells Point neighborhood and has his own rooftop deck, which has been nice for catching some sun during quarantine. Baltimore has given him a new love for crab cakes and seasoned fries, so Stephan is grateful that his new attire consists primarily of scrubs.

Joniqua was born in Opelousas, Louisiana and raised mostly in Houston, Texas. She attended University of Houston where she earned a BS in Biology, and developed an interest in public health and social justice. She attended Baylor College of Medicine where she became heavily involved in White Coats for Black Lives, the Student National Medical Association and medical education. She took time off to work as a research fellow at the NIH in a lab focused on the social determinants of health and cardiovascular disease. During her free time you can find her browsing for new houseplants, listening to live jazz, dancing bachata or reading a novel on her apartment rooftop. She is overjoyed to be a part of the Osler Medical Residency and has been so impressed by the incredibly supportive environment and nurturing learning from such humble, brilliant minds. Since moving to Baltimore, she has enjoyed exploring nearby hiking trails and parks, learning more about the unique identities of its various neighborhoods, and discovering more about the city's complex history while caring for its wonderful residents.

Rohini grew up in Nashville, TN where she learned to love country music and hot chicken. She attended Johns Hopkins University where she earned a BA in Neuroscience, and developed an interest in health equity. She attended Vanderbilt where she earned an MD/MBA to be able to convince providers and payers to invest in the social determinants of health. She picked the Urban Health Track because she would gain a strong inpatient clinical reasoning foundation while also being able to rotate in underserved outpatient settings. In the future, she looks forward to working with her Osler co-residents to empower patients to be their healthiest self. Outside of medicine, she enjoys dancing, exploring new restaurants, and baking.
Sara Corderman, MD

Sara spent her formative years in Upstate New York's Capital District. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in Political Science with Honors before working in clinical bioethics. Sara returned to New York and linked directly from the Columbia Postbac Premed program to medical school at SUNY Downstate. During medical school she had the opportunity to rotate at a variety of hospitals and observe different healthcare delivery models in action, which sparked her interest in innovation. When not distracted by the New York Times crossword puzzle, she enjoys discovering Baltimore's finest sour beers. The Osler Medical Residency has already been an incredible catalyst for clinical and professional growth, and Sara is delighted to live and work in the same city as her co-interns, her brother, and Mr. Trash Wheel.

Julie Coursen was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia in a family of six. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Davidson College, she worked as a Scientific Program Analyst at the NIH: National Human Genome Research Institute for 2 years post-grad. She attended the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, and she has interests in infectious disease, pulmonary/critical care, and ultrasound. Outside of medicine, Julie enjoys reading mysteries, learning to golf, and playing board games with her family. Sophie M. Crinion was born in Paisley, Scotland to Northern Irish parents, and considers herself an Irish American. She immigrated to San Jose, California at a young age. For undergraduate she studied Biology at Loyola Marymount University where she studied spider ecology, decided a career working with humans would be more interesting, and accordingly spent two years after graduation doing education and homeless outreach before beginning medical school at UCSF. With a fierce passion for patient health, happiness, and justice at all ages and income levels, Sophie is a proud member of the joint medicine-pediatrics at JHH.

Tracy was born at Fort Bragg Army base in Fayetteville, NC, but grew up on the gulf coast of Mississippi. She majored in Biomedical Sciences at the University of South Alabama and remained to complete a PhD in the Department of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine. Following graduate school, Tracy worked as a Postdoctoral fellow researcher at LSU health sciences center. After her fellowship, Tracy attended LSU SOM where she was active in many community advocacy organizations and the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). Tracy was happy to match at her top choice for residency, Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is extremely honored to work with the top innovators in Medicine. Chris grew up outside of Philadelphia and then attended Duke for undergrad. She is a huge Eagles, Sixers, Phillies, and Duke basketball fan trying to carve out a niche in Ravens/Terps country. She went to medical school at Penn where she became interested in translational research in immunotherapy and epidemiology as well as in global health. When not at Johns Hopkins Hospital, she can be found running/biking at Patterson Park, eating ice cream at B'More Licks, or at her local church. She enjoys that the Osler program gives her tremendous ownership over her patients' care, pushes her every day, and provides amazing mentors and peers to be stuck in the trenches with. Brent Gudenkauf, MD

Brent was born in Phoenix, AZ and spent his formative years exploring the Western US. He studied biology at Cornell University, which is where he met his wife Franciska. He also studied biomedical science at the University of Pennsylvania and worked in human genome sequencing before graduating from Texas Tech School of Medicine. He is interested in Cardiovascular Disease fellowship and in translating genomic findings into clinical practice. Outside of the hospital, he likes biking, hiking, and swimming, as well as Texas barbecue. Brent and his wife Franciska were thrilled to couples-match at Johns Hopkins. They chose the Osler Residency because of its emphasis on rigorous clinical training, learning at the bedside from medically complex patients at a tertiary center. So far Brent has really loved his time in Baltimore, especially being able to live on the harbor and walk along the shore on his off days. Ling grew up in Shenzhen, a coastal city in Southern China and came to Johns Hopkins University to pursue a double degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Applied Mathematics. She developed a strong interest in clinical research while working closely with Parkinson Disease patients at the NIH, and she went to Albert Einstein College of Medicine to complete her medical degree. Her hobbies include watching food videos and cooking. She loves hanging out with Osler residents in her free time and sharing good wines. Since joining the Osler Medical Residency, she has appreciated the collegial spirits of her co-interns and seniors and excellent teachings from world-renowned experts on rounds on the various services she had been on. She enjoys walking on the waterfront and the ease of driving in Baltimore, and she can't wait to explore more hiking trails in the area and (hopefully) learn to sail during residency!

Robert is a first-generation physician born in New Carrollton, MD to parents of Italian-Irish and Iranian descent. Afterward, he spent a year as a post-baccalaureate researcher at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and a subsequent year as a research technologist at Johns Hopkins before matriculating there in 2012 as an MD-PhD student. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, newborn son, and two adopted dogs. Robert chose to stay at Hopkins for the Osler Medical Residency Training Program because he was impressed with the amazingly smart and talented yet down-to-earth residents as a medical student. In addition, he has found the faculty to be inspiring and emulate an equal importance of medicine and science in their careers. Since he has spent a significant amount of time in Baltimore and Maryland, Robert has many food (e.g. Koco's for the best crab cakes, nearby Ellicott City for amazing Korean food) and day-trip recommendations (e.g. Gunpowder Falls for a scenic hike, Rehobeth beach for a relaxing stroll on the boardwalk), so don't hesitate to ask!

Artrish "Trish" Jefferson was born and raised in a small town called Gifford, FL. She received her bachelor's degree in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Central Florida followed by a master's degree in Biomedical Sciences. She attended medical school at Meharry Medical college and there determined that she had a strong interest in Internal Medicine. Although she is undecided about what fellowship she may pursue, she is excited to continue to learn and experience all the subspecialties that medicine has to offer. In her free time, Trish loves to travel, fish, and sing. Trish enjoys so much about the Osler Medical Residency program, "It is a family", she states. She loves how everyone is so very supportive and willing to teach to ensure that you will become the best possible physician that you can be. She next attended the Perelman School of Medicine, where she also earned a Masters in Bioethics. Outside of medicine, Lauren enjoys investigating new recipes, hosting friends for dinner, Peloton treadmill bootcamps (team Jess Sims), and watching telenovelas on Netflix. Trent is the oldest of three, born and raised in sunny Orlando, FL. He attended Florida State University where he majored in biochemistry. He then moved, pretty far north, to Cleveland, OH to obtain a Masters in Medical Physiology before taking on a full-time role as a Health Scientist at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. After a few years, he continued his educational studies at The Ohio State University where he obtained his medical degree. His hobbies include bike riding along the harbor, indoor rock climbing, and interior design. Trent says the best part about the Osler Medical Residency is the overwhelming sense of family and everyone's commitment to high-quality patient-centered care. With regards to Baltimore, you can catch Trent soaking up the morning sunshine while journaling at Federal Hill or exploring the latest pescatarian cuisine downtown.

Brigitte was born in Damour, Lebanon, a charming town on the Mediterranean coast. During medical school at Columbia University, she deepened her interest in genetic and structural cardiology as well as medical education in global health. Liz grew up along the coast of southern Rhode Island, which she will tell you, is wicked pretty. She ventured inland to pursue a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Pennsylvania State University, where she developed a transient appreciation of college sports and an enduring fascination with human physiology. After living in Boston and doing clinical research with inspiring physician-scientists, she enrolled at the Temple University School of Medicine in North Philadelphia. At Temple, Liz came to value grit and clinical reasoning. She spent a year working in melanoma genetics research, sparking her interest in medical bioinformatics. Outside of residency, she enjoys playing soccer at Patterson Park, reading along the Baltimore waterfront and working tirelessly to convince her generation that Spotify is the premier social media platform. She is thrilled to join the Osler Medical Residency, and to work within an accomplished and passionate community that sees meaningful connection as the key to great patient care and great learning.

Ann grew up in Florida before moving to the midwest for her undergraduate and medical degrees at Northwestern and Case Western Reserve University. Ann loves spending time outdoors, craft beer and coffee, reading (fantasy > sci-fi), video games, and British murder mystery television. She made the terribly long 20-minute journey to attend Brown University for undergrad (which is a long way for Rhode Island standards). Emboldened, she crossed the border to attend Yale School of Medicine after a few gap years doing clinical research. She cultivated interests in humanities in medicine, history of medicine, and health equity/ social determinants of health. Kristina is interested in academic general internal medicine and enjoys cooking new foods with her partner Ryan (pediatrics), writing, and laughing at her very silly cat. Steven grew up in North Carolina and attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where he studied political science and English. After two years working as an English teacher in the Mississippi Delta with Teach For America, he moved to Baltimore to complete the post-bac pre-med program at Goucher College. He then moved to nearby Washington, D.C. for medical school, during which he completed the Medical Research Scholars Program at the NIH and the Epidemiology Elective Program at the CDC. Steven chose the Osler Medical Residency because of its rigorous clinical training, excellent housestaff camaraderie, and unparalleled public health opportunities. He was excited to return to Baltimore because it offers the vibrancy and amenities of a big city with a reasonable cost of living. In his spare time, Steven enjoys gardening on his rooftop and attempting to train his puppy, Banjo.

Melvin was born in Prince George's County, Maryland (The DMV!). As the only child, he opted to stay close to his mother and grandmother by attending the University of Maryland, College Park where he majored in Neurobiology and Physiology. He then went on to attend Duke University School of Medicine where he fostered his passion of working with vulnerable populations. Most notably, he mentored disenfranchised youth, helping them find their purpose in life and encouraging them never to give up. Melvin plans to pursue a career in cardiology, with a keen interest in interventional and structural heart cardiology. Outside of medicine, you can catch Melvin at the gym or out with his friends and family. In regard to the Osler Medical Residency, he has truly enjoyed his time on "The O", working with all the amazing residents, and learning from some of the world's best clinicians. Coming from Washington, DC, Baltimore has taken Melvin by surprise, he really enjoys all of the great restaurants, especially those on the waterfront.

She enjoys running/walking along the inner harbor, trying new restaurants with her co-interns, and laying out on her rooftop in Fells Point. Leon was born in Ukraine, but he came to the U.S. when he was two and grew up in the colloquial "outside of Philly" area. He went to undergrad and med school at Pitt and part of him will always remain a Yinzer. He enjoys playing tennis, piano, and bass guitar, and considers himself something of an amateur poker enthusiast (though unfortunately his financial records indicate he will not be able to quit his day job anytime soon). One of his favorite parts about the Osler Medical Program is the camaraderie and support of all his co-interns and senior residents - despite working hard, it's an incredible environment and that makes it so much more fun to come to work everyday. He is looking forward to exploring even more restaurants and bars in Baltimore as this pandemic (hopefully) winds down - the food scene has been fantastic so far.

Puja was born in Seattle, WA and grew up mostly in the small suburbs of Dallas, Texas. She attended Texas A&M University College of Medicine, and she and her partner couples matched to the Osler program and finally ended 4 years of long distance. Puja continues her obsessions with gardening, interior design, and traveling. Since intern year, she's continued to furniture flip and has been cultivating a mini urban jungle in her apartment. Puja is constantly impressed by her co-residents and senior residents' capability and feels at home in this city. She's amazed by how quickly she's come to love Baltimore and feels a community in place with the smaller city and beautiful waterfront. She loves exploring the area with her partner and co-residents!

Jillian grew up in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, where she learned to love the outdoors. She graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Neurobiology, while also pursuing her interest in bioethics. After college, she worked as a consultant for Clarion Healthcare and wrote a dystopian novel. She attended medical school at Brown University. She is passionate about Infectious Diseases and Emerging Infections, and much of her research has been on Ebola Virus Disease. She couples matched to Johns Hopkins with her fiance, Wes Durand (orthopedic surgery). Her hobbies include baking, hiking, gardening, and writing. To Jillian, the biggest highlights of the Osler residency program are the wonderfully supportive community of colleagues and mentors, and the daily opportunities to learn from leading experts. Zaid, a first generation Indian-American and eldest of three, was brought up in south-central Pennsylvania. He plans to become an academic cardiologist, integrating clinical care, research and medical education. He values the wonderful camaraderie between the residents, which makes even the most demanding work enjoyable. Aarti Thakkar, MD, MPH

Aarti Thakkar grew up in North Carolina and spent much of her childhood between Rocky Mount and Raleigh. She received her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Global Health from Duke University. She went on to get an MD from Duke School of Medicine and Masters in Public Health from UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. During medical school, she took an extra year to complete a Doris Duke Fellowship in Western Kenya. Aarti's research interests at home and abroad were focused on understanding barriers to care and implementing interventions to improve access to care for patients from underserved regions. At this time, she hopes to combine her interests in public health and non-communicable diseases by pursuing a career in Global Health Cardiology. In her free time, Aarti enjoys playing tennis, hiking, brunching, and really anything that lets her be outside. Her favorite part of residency so far has been her time on the O with her incredibly supportive, down-to-earth, and thoughtful co-interns and the Longcope family. Bhavya Varma, MD

Bhavya was born in the vibrant capital city of New Delhi, India. She moved to Toronto, Canada at a young age and developed a devotion to all Cadbury chocolate offerings. Her family then moved to Charleston, SC which was luckily a culinary paradise and she learned the joy of warm biscuits and hushpuppies. She attended Duke University for undergrad where she studied neuroscience and women's studies; despite her best attempts to ignore sports, she will be a Cameron Crazie until the end. She then went to the University of Pittsburgh for medical school and further developed her interests in women's health, medical education, and narrative medicine. Outside of the hospital, Bhavya enjoys bombarding everyone's social calendars with ice cream, wine, and endless pizza dates after long shifts. She also enjoys singing loudly in her car, painting and sketching, and lots and lots of podcasts/documentaries. She has loved her co-interns, the best part of residency, and the reason to keep smiling at the end of a long day.
Laura Walsh, MD

During her time in residency thus far, she has most enjoyed learning from the incredibly diverse and complex patient population served by Johns Hopkins Hospital. Fawzi Zghyer was born and raised in East Jerusalem. Fawzi developed an interest in Medical Education and curricular innovations, biotechnology, and telemedicine to serve the underserved. Outside of medicine, Fawzi enjoys playing soccer, hanging out with friends and exploring new coffee shops.
